A writer and social anthropologist, Dr. MELBA PADILLA MAGGAY is a sought-after international speaker and consultant on culture and social development issues, particularly on the interface of religion, culture and development.
She co-founded the Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture (ISACC) in 1978 as a response to the crisis posed by authoritarianism in the Philippines. For almost 40 years, ISACC has served as a conscientizing voice in politics and church-and-culture issues.
Dr. Maggay has written numerous books and articles on social, cultural and theological issues and is an award-winning literary writer. Her book “Transforming Society” has been translated into Spanish, Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia.
Her most recent book, “Dark Days of Authoritarianism,” covers the social, economic, and political conditions under the martial law instituted by President Ferdinand Marcos from 1972 to 1981 in the Philippines. Her book illustrates the strength and determination of Philippine women to create a better society despite being met by great adversity and the importance of Christian faith for sustaining the lives of those who suffered and survived this tumultuous period.
