During the early half of the twentieth century, the Church in China experienced great challenges from the New Thought Movement and Anti- Christian Movement. In response to these movements, Mr. T. C. Chao attempted to reinterpret Jesus Christ to make him relevant to China’s context and social thought. He attempted to develop Christology based on the convergence of Western Christianity, Chinese culture, and social change. A personality-oriented interpretation of Jesus Christ that focused on his character and spirit was developed by Chao to empower intellectual Christians to contribute to the national and spiritual reconstruction of China.
